How to get to Ruaha National Park
Ruaha sits deep in southern Tanzania: 625 km from Dar es Salaam by road, or two and a half hours by scheduled bush flight. Both work. Here is exactly how, with times and realistic costs.
By scheduled flight (most visitors)
Three airlines fly scheduled circuits into Ruaha's Msembe airstrip, next to park HQ; Jongomero airstrip serves the southern sector. Coastal Aviation connects Ruaha daily with Dar es Salaam (08:30 → 11:00), Zanzibar (08:00 → 11:00), Arusha and Nyerere/Selous (09:15 → 11:00, 1 h 45), with return flights leaving Ruaha around 11:45.
Auric Air links Ruaha with Dar, Zanzibar and Nyerere, and flies the Serengeti–Ruaha bridge direct three times a week (Mon/Thu/Sat), the practical way to combine the northern and southern circuits. Safari Air Link flies daily and continues west to Katavi and Mahale on Mondays and Thursdays, the only scheduled option on that leg for most of the year.
No airline publishes a fixed fare table for Ruaha; expect roughly $300–450 one-way from Dar depending on season. Add TANAPA's landing fee of $10 per person. Book through the airline or let your lodge arrange it. In-park camps include airstrip transfers.
By road
The drive from Dar follows the Tanzam highway to Iringa. Long but on tarmac the whole way, passing straight through Mikumi National Park (free game viewing from the highway). From Iringa town the park road runs 108 km west via Idodi and Tungamalenga to the gate.
That last stretch has always been graded gravel, but it is being upgraded to a surfaced road under a World Bank–financed contract signed in 2024. Sections are completed progressively. Check current status locally rather than assuming where the tarmac ends.
Plan the drive over two days if you can: sleep in Iringa (or at Mikumi), stock up there, and arrive at the gate fresh. Gates are open 06:00–18:00; arriving after 18:00 means sleeping outside the park.

Self-drive notes
- A 4x4 is strongly recommended, and essential in and after the rains (November–May).
- Iringa is your last reliable fuel stop. Fuel at Msembe HQ is sometimes available but unreliable and expensive.
- Bring cash-free payment: gates only accept card or mobile money via the government payment gateway.
- No public transport enters the park. Buses run Dar–Iringa; from Iringa hire a 4x4 with driver or arrange a lodge transfer.
- Iringa's Nduli Airport (IRI) has ±14 flights a week from Dar (±1 h). Fly there and drive the last leg if bush flights are full.
Combining Ruaha with other parks
The classic southern-circuit pairing is Nyerere (Selous) + Ruaha: a 1 h 45 flight connects them daily. Road travellers naturally combine Ruaha with Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountains, which sit on the same corridor from Dar.
