What a visit to Ruaha actually costs

Two of you, three nights, camping at a TANAPA public campsite: about $656 all-in at 2026 rates once you add the 18% VAT that TANAPA charges on every fee. That is the trip most self-drive visitors actually take, and this page shows where every dollar of it goes, then prices the same three nights at a mid-range lodge and at the fly-in top end.

If you only want the answer

For two people self-driving to a TANAPA public campsite, three nights comes to about $656 at 2026 rates: $212.40 in conservation fees, $212.40 in campsite fees, $141.60 in vehicle entry and about $90 in diesel from Iringa. All of that already includes TANAPA's 18% VAT. The same three nights run to about $2,696 at a mid-range lodge such as Ruaha River Lodge, and to roughly $11,545 at a top-end fly-in camp such as Jabali Ridge once you add flights from Dar es Salaam.

Budget one: self-drive camping, the trip that costs least

About $656 for two people over three nights, and here is the arithmetic. TANAPA's tariff sheet lists a $30 conservation fee, a $40 vehicle fee and a $30 public campsite fee, each per day, then adds 18% VAT on top of all three: $35.40, $47.20 and $35.40 at the gate. Those are the official 2023/24 tariff-sheet figures, and Tanzania has frozen park fee increases with no new tariff published since. (TANAPA's own Ruaha page currently shows $70 for entry instead of $30; our fees page explains why that figure looks like a copy-paste error from the Serengeti tariff, and why we still budget on $35.40.)

We count three fee-days for a three-night stay, and price the vehicle fee at the foreign-registered rate for the lowest weight band. Hire a Tanzanian-registered 4x4 locally instead and the vehicle fee drops to TSh 20,000 a day, about $7.50 at September 2026 exchange rates, which saves roughly $120 across three days.

Public campsites need no advance booking, but bring your own tent, water and food; there is little to buy at Msembe beyond a small park canteen. Fuel at Msembe HQ is sometimes available but unreliable and pricier than Iringa, so fill up and carry a reserve before the gate.

Budget two: a mid-range lodge stay at Ruaha River Lodge

About $2,696 for two people over three nights. Ruaha River Lodge, on the rapids of the Great Ruaha River, is the obvious mid-range choice for a couple: it is the largest lodge inside the park, open year-round including the green season, and it quotes a public from-rate rather than the rates-on-request most competitors use. Its published rate is from $340 per person per night full board including game drives, rising to about $420 in the roughly June-to-October high season (checked Jul 2026).

Staying inside the park at any private lodge adds TANAPA's hotel concession fee, $30 plus VAT per person per day, on top of whatever the lodge itself charges; lodges almost never fold this into their quoted rate. Add the same conservation and vehicle fees as the camping budget, and the TANAPA fee stack alone runs to just over $70 per person per day before you have paid for a single night's accommodation.

Ruaha River Lodge's rate climbs to about $420 per person per night in the June-to-October high season; swap that figure in and the three-night total moves to roughly $3,176. Confirm which season band your dates fall into before you book, and ask directly whether TANAPA fees are quoted separately.

Budget three: fly-in and top-end

About $11,545 for two people over three nights, all-inclusive, before you shop the flight around. Jabali Ridge, Asilia's flagship lodge on a rocky kopje in the northern game circuit, is Ruaha's benchmark top-end address: eight open-fronted suites, night drives, walking safaris and a rate that swings hard by season. Its published high-season rate for July to October, the window this page's other dry-season figures also sit in, is $1,600 per person per night all-inclusive; the same suite is $880 in the low season.

Kwihala Camp, the other name people search for at this tier, no longer exists under that name. Asilia rebuilt it in July 2024 as Kokoko Camp on the same Mwagusi riverbank, now taken exclusive-use only at $1,600 a night for the whole camp regardless of how many of its six guests you bring. For two people that lands close to Jabali Ridge's per-person rate; fill all six beds and it becomes considerably cheaper per head.

You reach this tier by scheduled bush flight, not by road. Coastal Aviation and Auric Air both run circuits into Msembe airstrip, next to park HQ, connecting daily to Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha, a schedule we confirmed as of 15 Aug 2026; Auric also flies a direct Serengeti–Ruaha link three times a week. No airline publishes a fixed fare table, so budget $300 to $450 per person one-way from Dar, meaning $1,200 to $1,800 return for two, plus TANAPA's $10 per person landing fee at Msembe.

The flight line is the biggest swing factor here: at the top of the published fare range it adds $1,800 for two, at the bottom $1,200, moving the three-night total between roughly $11,245 and $11,845. Jabali Ridge's rate already includes airstrip transfers, game drives, night drives, walks and house drinks, so little else gets added once you land.

The fuel maths, dated

EWURA's cap price effective Wednesday 2 September 2026 puts diesel at Iringa town, your last reliable fill-up before the park, at TSh 3,981 per litre. At the Bank of Tanzania's indicative rate that week, about TSh 2,651 to the dollar, that works out to roughly $1.50 a litre (both checked 13 Sep 2026).

Our estimate assumes about 400 km of driving: the 108 km each way between Iringa and the gate, plus roughly 150 km of game-drive loops over three days. Ruaha's mix of gravel and newly tarmacked road pushes a loaded 4x4 to around 15 litres per 100 km, which is about 60 litres, or roughly $90 of diesel at the September 2026 price. Fuel at Msembe HQ is sometimes available but unreliable and more expensive; fill up in Iringa and carry a reserve.

Paying at the gate

Ruaha's gates are cashless. TANAPA collects fees through the Government Electronic Payment Gateway (GePG): a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card, or Tanzanian mobile money such as M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa or Airtel Money. Bring a card that works internationally; there is no facility to pay US dollars in cash at the gate itself, unlike some neighbouring parks. Bring your passport too. ID is mandatory when buying a permit, and fees are non-refundable once paid.

Gates open 06:00 to 18:00, and game drives run 06:30 to 19:00; driving after dark is only allowed on a booked, paid night drive. Arrive after 18:00 and you sleep outside the park, whatever your booking says.

Where the money surprises people

TANAPA quotes every headline figure before VAT. The $30 conservation fee is $35.40 at the gate, the $40 vehicle fee is $47.20, and the $30 campsite fee is $35.40; the 18% adds up fast across a party and a multi-night stay.
Gates are cashless, the opposite of what many travellers expect after other East and southern African parks. Card or mobile money only, so a wallet full of dollars is no backup plan here.
Staying at any private lodge inside the park adds TANAPA's hotel concession fee, $30 plus VAT per person per day, on top of the lodge's own quoted rate. Almost no lodge folds this into the number it advertises.
The vehicle fee is a flat rate per vehicle, not per person, up to 2,000 kg. A group of four or six splits that $47.20 four or six ways; two people on their own absorb the whole thing.
TANAPA's own website currently lists $70 for entry, not $30. It is the Serengeti rate, copy-pasted onto several other park pages including Ruaha's; see our fees page for the full story of why we still budget on the tariff-sheet figure.
Kwihala Camp, the name older trip reports still search for, closed and reopened in July 2024 as Kokoko Camp: same riverbank, exclusive-use only, priced per camp rather than per person.
No airline publishes a fixed Ruaha fare. Budget the full $300–450 one-way range per person from Dar es Salaam rather than anchoring on the low end, and add TANAPA's $10 per person landing fee at Msembe.
