Ruaha in April
April is Ruaha with almost the whole interior switched off. The rain is already easing from March's totals, but the camps that make a dry-season Ruaha trip special have, by now, sent their staff home for the season.
If you only want the answer
April is the thinnest month for accommodation in Ruaha: rain falls to 45 mm and the park itself never closes, but nearly every seasonal camp inside it does. Your realistic options are the handful of year-round properties, confirmed by phone rather than assumed.
April weather: the numbers behind an empty park
The thirty-year average for April shows rain falling to 45 mm across 7 days, roughly a quarter of January's total, with days at 28.1°C and nights at 18.8°C, mild rather than harsh. On paper that looks like the rains winding down. On the ground, the river is falling fast now, the flood pulse draining out of the system within weeks, and the black-cotton roads that link the interior camps stay difficult for longer than the rain totals alone suggest.
This is why April functions as Ruaha's off switch even though the weather is genuinely improving. Lodges built for a dry-season clientele have no incentive to keep running for a trickle of rain-season visitors, and most simply don't.
What's actually trading
Your real shortlist: Ruaha River Lodge and the TANAPA bandas at Msembe run all year, Mwagusi is one of the very few interior camps built to operate through the rains, and outside the gate, Tandala, Ruaha Hilltop, Tungamalenga and Chogela never close because they never carry the park's concession fees in the first place. Everything else, Jabali Ridge, Ikuka, Kigelia, Kokoko, Jongomero, Usangu, Mdonya, Asanja and Kichaka, is shut for some or all of April.
A caution worth repeating: three budget properties around the gate have lost their websites. We traced all three in September 2026 and they look like they are still trading, but reach them by phone or through an agent rather than the addresses that used to work, and confirm before you build a flight around one. The upside of the quiet
If you do come, you'll likely be the only vehicle at whatever waterhole you find, and rates at the properties that stay open are as low as Ruaha gets. Pack proper rain gear rather than a light shower jacket, and build at least a day's buffer into any self-drive plan, since flooded sections of track are the main risk this month, not the animals or the heat.
