Flying to Ruaha: what actually operates, and when it's worth it

What flies into Msembe, checked 14 September 2026

Coastal Aviation runs the fullest published schedule to Msembe: Dar es Salaam 08:30 to 11:00, Zanzibar 08:00 to 11:00, Arusha 08:15 to 11:30, and Nyerere (Selous) 09:15 to 11:00, with a same-day return leaving Ruaha around 11:45 for Dar, Selous and Zanzibar. That timetable was live on coastal.co.tz on 14 September 2026, but the site does not state which days of the week each leg runs, or a fare, so confirm both with reservations@coastal.co.tz before you build a trip around it.

Auric Air is the second scheduled option into Msembe, connecting Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Nyerere, and it is the one to book if you are stitching a northern and southern circuit together: the Serengeti-Ruaha bridge flies direct three times a week, Monday, Thursday and Saturday, confirmed on auricair.com on 14 September 2026. No current fare is published for the route; the only price on Auric's own site was a sample quote from a 2018 calendar, which tells you nothing about what you would pay in 2026, so get a live quote from the airline or your lodge instead.

Safari Air Link makes the plainest claim of the three, that it flies daily to Ruaha with onward connections across Dar and the wider safari circuit, and it continues twice a week, Monday and Thursday, from Ruaha to Katavi and on to Mahale for the chimpanzees, the only scheduled option on that leg for most of the year. What its site does not publish is a timetable with clock times or a fare; both sit behind a downloadable rates-and-timetable document or a direct query to flights@flysal.com, checked the same day.

Bush-flight schedules in Tanzania move by season and by aircraft availability. Reconfirm your specific flight with the airline or your lodge within a week or two of travel.

The landing fee, and the fare nobody prints

Every flight into Msembe, scheduled or charter, carries TANAPA's landing fee of $10 per person, on top of whatever the airline charges for the seat. That figure comes from the same official tariff sheet our fees page is built from, and it applies regardless of which of the three carriers above brings you in.

On the ticket price itself, we will not print a number nobody publishes. Budget $300 to $450 per person one-way from Dar es Salaam, the range quoted by agents and lodges rather than listed on any airline's own site, and treat a more specific figure you're offered as a live, season-dependent quote rather than a fixed fare.

Luggage limits: pack for a bush plane, not an airliner

Coastal Aviation caps checked and carry-on luggage together at 15 kg per person, in a soft bag no larger than 40 x 40 x 80 cm, confirmed on coastal.co.tz on 14 September 2026. Pay for an XL seat and the allowance rises to 30 kg, subject to availability.

Auric Air allows more: 20 kg per person including hand luggage, cameras and anything else you're carrying, in a bag no larger than 90 x 65 x 35 cm, per auricair.com checked the same day. Soft bags are recommended rather than required, and Auric sells extra capacity in 10 kg blocks up to 40 kg over the limit.

Safari Air Link does not publish a luggage limit on its site. Assume the same 15-20 kg soft-bag norm every bush operator in Tanzania works to, and get the actual number from the airline before you pack.

Whichever carrier you fly, leave the hard suitcase in Dar. Bush planes load bags into a pod under the fuselage, and a soft bag is often the difference between your kit flying with you and being sent on a later flight.

Drive or fly: the honest answer

If you already have wheels, Iringa is the sensible base, not the airstrip. Msembe sits about 108 km from Iringa town, two to three hours over gravel and partly resurfaced road, and once you're on the ground you need a vehicle to move through a 20,226 km2 park regardless of how you arrived. Fly in without a hired vehicle or a lodge transfer arranged, and you have landed in a wilderness with no way to move through it.

Flying earns its place in one situation above all others: you're booked into a camp that includes airstrip transfers, game drives and a guide in its quoted rate. In that case a roughly two-and-a-half-hour flight from Dar replaces a ten-to-twelve-hour drive, and the ticket is really just another line item in a package you've already paid for. Every camp in Ruaha's northern circuit prices itself this way, transfers included.

If you're self-driving with camping gear, keep driving. Iringa is your last reliable fuel stop and the place to provision properly; the fly-in schedule and fares above exist for a different kind of trip than yours.

• Self-driving or with a hired 4x4: drive via Iringa. The vehicle is the safari once you're inside the park.
• Booked into a northern lodge with transfers included: fly Coastal or Auric to Msembe. The transfer is already paid for.
• Combining Ruaha with the Serengeti or Nyerere: fly. There is no road link on that route.
• Heading onward to Katavi or Mahale: Safari Air Link's Monday/Thursday leg is the only scheduled option for most of the year.
• Booking on a fare you saw online: reconfirm it directly. None of the three carriers publishes a fixed price for Ruaha.
