December closes the loop on Ruaha's year. The thirty-year record shows rain rushing back in, the Great Ruaha rising again as its dry-season pools reconnect into something that behaves like a river once more, and the park turning green almost by the week.

December is the opening month of Ruaha's green season: wetter, cheaper and full of newborn animals and migrant birds, with the specific exception of the Christmas and New Year weeks, which sell out the handful of open camps despite the quiet season around them.
The year turns over
Thirty years of data put December's rain at 162 mm across 20 days, a sharp jump from November, with days at 28.6°C and nights at a mild 19.7°C, the transition from dry-season heat to wet-season humidity essentially complete by month's end. The Great Ruaha is rising again, its dry-season pools reconnecting into something that behaves like a river once more, and the bush that thinned out through August and September starts filling back in.
December overlaps with the start of Eleonora's falcon passage, a scarce Palearctic migrant that moves through Ruaha in December and January on its way south, one of the more specific reasons serious birders plan a green-season trip rather than treating it as the off-season by default.
What's open, and what's about to close
Most of the interior is still running in December: Jabali Ridge, Ikuka, Kigelia, Jongomero, Mdonya and Asanja are all inside their season windows, alongside the year-round Ruaha River Lodge, Mwagusi and TANAPA bandas, and every outside-gate lodge as always. The camps that already shut for the year, Kokoko, Usangu Expedition Camp and Kichaka, won't reopen until the following June, so this isn't the month to chase any of the three.
Newborn impala and warthog start appearing underfoot on almost every drive, the first wave of a birthing season that continues into the new year, and tsetse pressure has dropped back down to its lowest levels since the previous rains.
Cheap month, expensive weeks
December's overall demand is low and rates reflect it, but the school-holiday stretch around Christmas and New Year is the exception: rooms at the open camps go early despite the quiet season around them, so book those specific dates months ahead even if the rest of December can wait until closer to the time. Build a weather buffer into any flight schedule too, since a heavy storm can delay a charter the same week it floods a transfer road.
